OSHA Continues to Add Employers to Severe Violations Enforcement Program

Two years after the start of the Severe Violator Enforcement Program (“SVEP”), the Labor Department’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (“OSHA”) continues to add employers to its list of offenders.
At the end of June, 330 establishments were designed as sever violators by OSHA. More than 20 Ohio companies found their way onto this list. In the past year the number of employers added to SVEP has nearly doubled according to OSHA.

New Data Shows Improved Housing Starts, Builder Confidence Improves in July

According to the Department of Commerce housing starts jumped 6.9 percent in June, their highest level since autumn of 2008. Strong gains were made in both single family and apartment construction.
Total private housing starts rose to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 760,000 in June. These numbers exceeded those expected by economist. The Department of Commerce also adjusted housing starts statistics for the month of May to 711,000 from 708,000.

Republican National Labor Relations Board Member Resigns over Political Leak

Terence Flynn has resigned his position on the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) following a report issued by Board’s Inspector General which found he improperly leaked confidential information to two former Board members, one of whom at the time of the leak was a high level advisor to Mitt Romeny’s presidential campaign on labor policy and the other an attorney that represents the National Association of Manufactures.

Private Owned Housing Starts Grew in April

According to the U.S. Census Bureau privately owned housing starts grew 2.6% in April over March.
In April housing starts reached a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 717,000 compared to March’s estimate of 699,000 which was revised up from 654,000.

Who is Ohioans for Workplace Freedom?

Ohioans for Workplace Freedom has been granted the approval of the Ohio Ballot Board to begin circulating petitions to place a constitutional amendment on the ballot to make Ohio a “So Called Right to Work” state. The group will need to collect 385,253 signatures to place its measure on the ballot.

Court Strikes Down NLRB Election Rule due to Technicality

rule that would have expiated union representational elections was stuck down yesterday by the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia. The court ruled that because a member that opposed the rule failed to vote the National Labor Relations Board did not have a quorum and therefore the vote approving the rule was void.
