Housing Starts Up in August, As Single-Family Construction Strengthens

Housing starts rose 2.3% in the month of August; gains made were in the South and the Midwest, according to a joint report from the U.S. Census Bureau and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
Total privately owned housing starts rose to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 750,000 from 733,000 in July, or 2.3%. Compared to a year ago, housing starts were up significantly, a total of 29.1%.

Builder Confidence Climbs Again in September

Builder confidence rose for the fifth month in a row in September, rising to its highest level since the summer of 2006 according to the National Association of Home Builders.
The NAHB-Wells Fargo Housing Market Index rose to a reading of 40 in September, a three point improvement over September. The index has risen dramatically over the past year, September of 2011 the index stood at a meager 14.

Voters First to File Suit to Change Ballot Language

Voters First announced that it will soon file a lawsuit in the Ohio Supreme Court challenging the Ohio Ballot Board’s ballot language for Issue 2.
The Ohio Ballot Board, controlled by Republican majority, voted on party lines to approve a shorten summary of the redistricting amendment for ballots this fall.

NAHB Reports Builder Confidence Rises to Highest Level Since 2007

Builder confidence continued to improve in August, rising two points to its highest level in more than five years accord to the National Association of Home Builders.
The NAHB-Wells Fargo Housing Market Index rose to a reading of 37 in August, a two point improvement over July. August marks the fourth consecutive month of an improvement in the NAHB-Wells Fargo Housing Market Index. In August of 2011 the Index stood at a meek 15.

ACT Ohio Files Complaint Over ALEC Fundraising

Columbus, Ohio- Today the Affiliated Construction Trades Ohio (“ACT Ohio”) submitted a complaint to Joint Legislative Inspector General, Tony W. Bledsoe, asserting that State Representative John Adams and his Legislative Aide Kara Joseph violated state ethics laws by actively fundraising for the American Legislative Exchange Council utilizing state resources, while on state property and on state time. Rep. John Adams is the Ohio Chairman of ALEC.

Construction Industry Unemployment Dips Slightly

The unemployment rate in the construction industry remains high but according to the Labor Department’s Bureau of Labor Statistics it dropped slightly in July. The unemployment rate dropped from 12.8% in June to 12.3% in July.
The Department of Labor found that two out of the three major areas of the construction industry added jobs in July. Heavy and civil engineering added 6,200 jobs and building and construction companies added 5,300 people to their payrolls.

ACT Ohio Announces its Endorsement of Voters First Redistricting Ballot Initiative

The Affiliated Construction Trades Ohio (ACT Ohio) announced today it has officially endorsed the Voters First ballot initiative. The Voters First ballot initiative was recently approved for the November ballot in Ohio. The constitutional amendment would create an independent redistricting commission to replace Ohio’s current system which allows the political party in power to gerrymander congressional and state legislative district lines.
