A Seattle contractor who obtained more than $1 million in government contracts now faces criminal charges, accused of scamming workers out of pay as part of a scheme to underbid competitors.

The Seattle Post Intelligencer has the full story on the investigation that saw a Seattle police officer trained as a drywall installer, who then went to work for the contractor.

The arrest is reportedly part of a larger investigation into claims that Washington subcontractors are abusing workers and ignoring wage laws.

Court documents indicate trade union representatives went to the King County Prosecutor’s Office with allegations that several subcontractors were bilking union and non-union workers and ignoring wage laws. The complaint prompted an investigation by Seattle police and the state Department of Labor & Industries, which confirmed union concerns about “rampant” abuse by subcontractors.
