Hospital Commerce

With nine nationally ranked hospitals and thirty others that meet standards for strong performance statewide, the medical industry has proven to be one of Ohio’s most profitable sectors and one of the largest hirers of construction professionals.

The $1.1 billion revitalization of the nationally-ranked Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, central Ohio’s only academic medical center, has created 5,000 construction jobs in the Columbus area. With a planned opening set for 2014, OSU has proposed the Center will have a $1.7 billion impact on the Ohio economy by 2015.

The Northeast Ohio construction industry, meanwhile, will get a huge boost in the next few years due to a large-scale expansion plan in the works for the MetroHealth System.

MetroHealth is often thought of as a small hospital system, as compared to the Cleveland Clinic and University Hospitals, but it is actually a huge physical plant with sixteen remote centers. MetroHealth will also be demolishing older buildings to make way for larger and more up-to-date facilities, upgrading to modern specifications and reducing energy, maintenance and operation costs. This entire renewal is looking to cost upwards of $1 billion and will provide serious opportunities for the Northeast Ohio building trades.

The Northeast Ohio medical community will also be bolstered in the near future due to a move by Case Western Reserve University and the Cleveland Clinic to construct a new building to place Cleveland at the forefront of medical education worldwide.

The Cleveland Clinic and CWRU, along with University Hospitals, MetroHealth Medical Center and the Medical Center Company, signed community benefits agreements in September 2013

“pledging to set goals for hiring local and minority skilled workers and to support training programs that feed the professional pipeline to the construction trades.”
Several agencies representing minority contractors and union workers spent more than two years fleshing out the details of these agreements that are now involved in billions of dollars worth of development plans in Northeast Ohio over the next decade.
